Training and Research
It is widely recognized that sustainable community development depends upon civil society having functional institutions which are able to plan, prioritize, implement and monitor community development initiatives according to their own perceived needs and priorities. This is particularly the case for rural and marginalized urban communities and groups. However, neither the institutions to undertake such community-led development, nor the capacity to manage them successfully exists within most communities in Nigeria.
The Training and research department (TRD) was established to fill this void by providing individual and institutional capacity for promoting participatory community development, good governance and environmental security. Through encouraging partnerships and dialogue, the TRD also aims to promote peaceful community development, bringing an end to inter and intra community conflict.
Our TRD also aims to support field based learning in a network of rural, community owned and managed ‘living universities’. ‘Living universities’ are the core campuses of the TRD where the communities are the classrooms and the teachers are the community members. In this way, rural communities can learn from their peers. Our resultant Community Foundations in Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Lagos States are typical examples of ‘living universities’, were the community is the classroom and the community members are the teachers.
